Washing Cars For A Cause (or Two)!

Joining in a combined effort to raise money for the Oahu SPCA and as part of their own community service project, more than a dozen students from Island Pacific Academy were on hand to wash and wax cars on a recent bright and beautiful Sunday at KMart in Kapolei. Under the guidance of IPA faculty advisors, Chris Luthi and Aiddy Weisbecker (who lent helping hands as well), the students and several OSPCA volunteers helped the shelter raise $935 in less than eight hours! The all day event held on Sunday, October 23 garnered strong support from the local community with one donor generously contributing a $100 bill in the donation jar.

According to Luthi, a Rotary Interact advisor, the students from IPA also benefitted from helping out during the car wash as part of the Sparrow Club, whose goal is to earn money from each hour of community service. The chosen "sparrow" designated for this fundraising opportunity was Dustin, a 13 year old Wahiawa boy with brain meningitis. Since entering the hospital at the beginning of June, Dustin and his family have accrued a very large medical bill, so the school plans to help raise funds for his treatment. Three students even remained at the car wash beyond their four hour shifts so they could earn more hours for Dustin. They ended up staying eight hours each, or 24 hours total ($240 for Dustin). In all, the IPA students earned 64 hours for Dustin at the car wash in addition to raising money for the OSPCA!

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers and to the students at IPA who continue to share their time and commitment to help animals (and people) in need!!

PET PHOTOS WITH “SANTA CLAWS” TO BENEFIT THE OAHU SPCA

Lexie is a medium sized dog, tan in color with a blue OSPCA collar.

Many people have been out searching for her but so far with no luck. Please keep an eye out for this sweet girl, who may be skiddish when approached because she is shy.

Preventing Animal Cruelty Begins With Education

It's a startling fact that if not taught at home, many children grow up unaware of how to care for animals and what is considered animal abuse. At the Oahu SPCA, we enthusiastically support educational programs and love to share with keiki of all ages how to care for animals in a loving and respectful manner. Knowledge is a powerful tool and the more children learn when they're young, the more they'll be responsible and loving pet owners as adults!

Recently, one of our active volunteers had the opportunity to speak at Mililani Middle School about animal cruelty at the request of fellow animal lover and teacher, Jenny Kuwahara. Students from the eighth grade Yellow Track classes proved to be a captive and enthusiastic audience while learning that animal cruelty can take place at shelters, beach parks, and even at home. The students were so motivated to help rescue animals at the Oahu SPCA that they planned a visit to the shelter for early next year to actively participate in feeding and watering the dogs and cats as well as cleaning out kennels.

As a result of our visit, the students will take this knowledge and educate others about the topic of animal cruelty. Still in the initial planning stages, they're also working on scheduling a Walk-A-Thon to be held in May 2012 as their culminating service learning activity. Proceeds and donations raised will help benefit the Oahu SPCA, a no kill animal shelter in Kapolei. We Are Not Pet People

We received this touching story from Jeff and his wife Niki in California, who recently started fostering a lab mix called Bear. This just goes to show how moving the bond between people and pets can be, and how even the toughest skeptics can fall in love with an animal in need...

“We aren’t pet people!” My wife and I had declared this again and again. And it didn’t matter who asked – friends, neighbors, co-workers, and especially our kids – the answer was always the same. WE ARE NOT PET PEOPLE!!!

We didn’t need the expense. We didn’t need the hassle. And we certainly didn’t need the commitment. After all, we are people on the move with too many places to go and too many people to see. Pets simply get in the way, with little or no return on investment.

But, then came Janet. Janet was a neighbor and friend in Hawaii who introduced us to the concept of “foster pets” since she was working at the Oahu SPCA. Like children, there are pets that need temporary homes from time to time. You get to enjoy an extra furry friend in your family without the burdensome commitment that comes with actually owning the pet yourself.

With the window now cracked (thanks Janet), my wife began exploring the idea of us, too, becoming foster pet parents. I was still leery, however. Sure, taking in a pet “temporarily” eliminates most of the long-term commitment concerns, but there would still be expenses. And there would certainly still be hassles. Lots and lots of hassles.

Shortly after moving to California and settling into a new job at a local, faith-based university, I found myself serving on the school’s “Care Committee.” The running joke is that I have to be put on a committee and schedule a time in order for me to “care.” Guilty as charged.

During one of our first meetings I heard a story about a student on campus who was estranged from his parents. His only remaining family member was a dog who was living with him in student housing. The committee was split down the middle…half focused on the sadness of the story. The other half zeroed in on the fact that the student was breaking the rules by having a pet on campus. The Dean of Students was emphatic. Either the dog was gone by 3 PM the next day OR the student AND the dog would be gone. Case closed.

Later that evening I shared the story with my wife, Niki. She jumped at the opportunity. This is what we’ve been looking for! This is our chance!!! I didn’t realize we had been looking for anything and thus failed to appreciate the opportunity in front of us. But, she was passionate. This dog needed a home and now was the time for us to step up and serve as foster parents. My heart began to open up to the idea. Slowly. And with one crucial condition…no BIG dogs!

I went to the Dean of Student’s office the next morning and began asking questions. The only thing he knew was that the dog’s name was Bear. This was my first clue that we wouldn’t exactly be adopting a Chihuahua. We arranged for me, Niki, the student and Bear to meet before lunch. In the interim, I prayed. “Please don’t let Bear be big. Please don’t let Bear be big. Please don’t let Bear be big.”

A few hours later we opened the dorm room door and Bear immediately came into view. Well, he wasn’t big. Instead, he was HUGE! I now understand that B.E.A.R. actually stood for Big Enormous Astronomical Rottweiler. Okay, he is really a mixed Labrador Retriever/Border Collie. But nonetheless, everything about this dog is Super-Sized!

Before giving a final decision, Niki and I went to lunch to talk things over. We were both emphatic. Niki was all “yes.” I was all “no.” We went back and forth until Niki presented her closing argument. “Well, people have invited you into their home over the years…did anyone ever ask how much you weigh?” It was then I knew that if Bear did not come home with us, the doghouse would be MY home. Permanently.

We are now one month into this grand experiment and I cannot begin to imagine our family without our beloved Bear. He is so sweet, so obedient and so loving. All he asks for in return is food, walks and the occasional tummy rub. And it is so rewarding to know we are doing the right thing. Our foster efforts are keeping a “family” together while a student continues his education. If it takes him six years to graduate instead of four, so much the better!

And by the way, we still claim that we are not pet people. After all, bears can’t be pets…can they?

Building Dog Beds

A big thanks to the 20+ volunteers who gave their time, tools and muscles to build new beds for the dogs at the Oahu SPCA on Saturday, October 15, 2011. A total of 60 beds were built and/or repaired to ensure that every dog had a nice, new bed to sleep on. Volunteers worked in pairs, one person operated the drill and the other person assisted to stretch out and hold the canvas in place. It was truly a labor of love. Everyone worked until the very last bed was completed. These kuranda beds are made using a PVC frame and legs keeping them raised off the floor. Their design is meant to bring comfort to our dogs and keeps their joints protected from the floor’s hard surface.

Once all of the beds were completed, volunteers formed a line that stretched from one building to the other. The beds were passed from volunteer to volunteer until all of the beds were brought from the work area. We wanted our volunteers to see first-hand how much the dogs would love and make use their beds. Core volunteers and staff gave a new bed to each dog and volunteers enjoyed watching happy dogs settle into their new beds! There was smiles all around from volunteers and dogs alike!

Aurora, one of the Oahu SPCA dogs, was the first to receive a new bed. She instantly jumped up onto the bed and wagged her tail in delight! Before we knew it, she was sound asleep proving that her new bed was serving its purpose. Ikaika decided to take a nap “under” his new bed and Thor started tossing his bed around like it was a toy.

Special thanks to Cyn for coordinating our volunteers and to Linda for obtaining all of the materials and supplies needed to build our beds.

We are so appreciative to all of you for sharing your time and making a difference in the lives of our dogs at the Oahu SPCA.

Our Grand Opening!

The Oahu SPCA's Grand Opening on Saturday, August 8, was a huge success! We could not have done it without the hard work and generousity of the many companies and individual volunteers who dedicated time, resources, and funds to get everything done!!

During our Grand Opening on Saturday, August 8, 10 dogs found their new forever homes.

Mickie, an 8 month old Shepherd/Minpin mix, was the first lucky dog adopted at the new shelter. Here he is bonding with his new parents, Melissa and Matt Bissell, on their first walk in front of the shelter.

Mabel, a Ridgeback/Shepherd mix, was the second to meet her new family: Peter and Lisa Kleen and their two daughters, Anna and Toni. Peter promised Lisa a new dog as inspiration to recover from her serious injury. Mabel was rescued in the mountains of the north shore, where she was abandoned and found shaking in fear. She will now have an important career as a service dog for Lisa and a best friend for the entire family.

We would like to extend a special mahalo to Honolulu Electric, Who Like. Inc, and David's Fencing, who finished the required 350 feet of fencing and three gates needed to in order to safely open the shelter just minutes before the grand opening. We'd also like to thank NC Plumbing for completing its shelter renovations in time for the arrival of all the animals.

Barktober Fest

Cocojor Emprium & Spaw (http://www.cocojor.com/) is celebrating Halloween with its First Annual Barktober Festival Sunday October 30 from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm located at 975 Kapiolani Blvd. Patrons are invited to bring the whole family and of course their canine companions to the spaw-tacular event.

Animal Shelter Relocating With the Help of Volunteers

Stephanie Ryan, co-founder and president of the Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, received kisses Saturday from a puppy named Cinnamon at the organization's new facility in Campbell Industrial Park.

About 50 volunteers helped move dozens of dogs Saturday to the Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' new shelter. Kerri Helmick and Teddy Morrison removed a dog from a kennel at the group's old location at 91-1839 Roosevelt Ave. About 50 volunteers spent their Saturday helping set up cages, installing fencing or moving animals into the new home of a no-kill animal shelter in Kapolei.

The Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which has been at 91-1839 Roosevelt Ave. for two years, plans to continue moving today and needs volunteers to help set up its new home. Aloha Petroleum Corp. provided the 14,000-square-foot space at 91-153 Hanua St. to the nonprofit for a two-year, rent-free lease.

"We need volunteers for the new construction, caring for the animals and donations for moving expenses," said Oahu SPCA co-founder Stephanie Ryan. "We're going to be remodeling in the next couple weeks."

About 70 dogs were moved Saturday, and 150 cats were expected to be moved today.

Over the next few weeks, the organization needs volunteers who can install fencing, paint and help with landscaping. Volunteers are also needed to clean, feed and care for the animals.

Ryan said the new location will allow the shelter to house more animals. Although the site is smaller indoors, it has an outdoor space four times larger — at 20,000 square feet — that will be fenced in and connected to the warehouse through a dog door, allowing the animals to move indoors and outdoors freely.

The new site is not expected to open until Oct. 1, unless the fence is completed sooner.

Ryan said the shelter, which adopts out about 100 animals a month, focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating and placing animals into homes. It also serves as the state's primary foster organization for pets of homeless people while they are staying at emergency or transitional shelters that don't allow animals, she said.

Cyn Okido, the group's volunteer coordinator, said more volunteers are needed this weekend for the major move, which involves transporting office equipment, pet food and other supplies.

"This move is very stressful for the animals," she said. "We're trying to keep everything calm."

Cat Room Creative Artist

It had long been the hopes and desires of many at the shelter to find an artistic volunteer who would decorate one of the shelter cat rooms and make it more fun for many of the finicky felines and for those who were strolling through the cat area. After all, having an eye-catching theme enhances the viewing for visitors who can then come into the cat room and pet and frolic with the animals.

As it turns out, our wish was granted during a chance encounter several months ago at a volunteer breakfast meeting at Lehua Elementary School with teacher volunteer Michael Ulep. Michael had done several wall paintings at the school, sharing his time and talents to design some fun whimsical themes. Upon hearing that the shelter had recently built a new cat room that featured windows and ledges throughout the area, he took a tour of the shelter and knew exactly what type theme he’d be working on.

Since a cat is related to the bigger lions and tigers in Africa, it only seemed natural that Michael would use the jungle theme to have the cats feel that they were in their natural habitat. After tracing the outlines, picking out the paints and arranging his schedule to get the job completed, Michael started much of the painting himself. He was assisted by Lehua teacher Ms. Hillary Tucker, friend Mikell Spencer and several shelter volunteers (including Brianna Mortl, one of the shelter manager’s daughters who really had fun expressing her creative side).

After the painting was completed, the cats seemed much happier in their new natural habitat and gave him a special greeting to acknowledge their appreciation! MAHALO MICHAEL ULEP!!

As it turns out, the cats have already “mewed” their request for Michael to paint a new cat room for them when they move to their new location at Campbell Industrial Park the end of the month.

Hi! We are Lexie (tan female shar pei mix) and Wishbone (black male terrier mix) and we are best friends. We are rescue dogs at the Oahu SPCA who have been living at the shelter since March 2010. Here's what the shelter staff and volunteers have to say about us...

Lexie: Lexie is a friendly, energetic and simple gal. She's happy just lounging on her doggie bed or chewing on a bone. Lexie won't demand too much of your attention, but her inquisitive nature will have her following you around just so she knows what you are up to. She'll surprise you with kisses; it's just her way of showing affection and saying, "I'm here ." Lexie enjoys going out for walks and exploring the outdoors. She wants you to know that she would be a loyal companion and make a wonderful addition to your home.

Wishbone: Wishbone is a sweet, humble and shy boy with so much potential waiting to be revealed. Spend time with him and you will see the subtle signs of his charming personality. Wishbone loves to go on walks and does very well on a leash. After your walk, he will surprise with kisses on your hand, just his way of saying, "thanks for making his day." Wishbone would do well in a home with another dog that he can mentor. This gentle soul is ready for his forever home. He won't ask you for much, but expect him to thrive and bring you lots of smiles!

The shelter will be moving locations by October and we are desperately hoping to find a forever home before then. Although we are loved and well taken care of by the shelter staff and volunteers, we really want to find a family who will cherish us and make us the king and queen of their home. We're Moving!

The Oahu SPCA is embarking on a great new adventure in the next couple of weeks... We are moving our shelter to a new location in Campbell Industrial in the Aloha Petroleum Warehouses!! Throughout this time we will need help:

Building
Remodeling
Cleaning
Moving
Fostering some of our animals

As a result of this move, we will also need:

Building supplies
Fencing
Trucks (especially flat beds) to haul kennels and large equipment
Monetary donations

On the weekends of September 17th and 24th, the Oahu SPCA needs your help to move and transport our shelter animals and equipment. We will be moving and working at both sites daily over the next two weeks but plan to do our big moving during the next two upcoming weekends.

Petco National Adoption Event

Once a month, animal lovers come from all over the island to visit their local Petco stores, which host a National Adoption Event weekend on a designated Saturday and Sunday. This gives adopters a first hand opportunity to meet and shake paws with a variety of shelter dogs from the Oahu SPCA in Kapolei who are looking for a loving and forever home with a new family.

One of the Petco stores in Hawaii that has been an active supporter of the OSPCA is located right in Pearl City. Management and employees, as well as the dog groomers, always look forward to meeting the new puppies, adult and senior dogs that the volunteers bring out to these events. More importantly, the outreach events at Petco encourage people to adopt or foster from a shelter first rather than buy from a pet store. Even people who may be reluctant about going to an animal rescue facility are more open about meeting a dog on a one-to-one basis at a pet friendly store like Petco.

Of course, the volunteers have just as much fun as the dogs do and it gives the animals a chance to socialize more with humans as well as with other four legged friends too! Our adoption rates continue to increase at the Oahu SPCA as more people get to know about us and our mission to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home animals that have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Celebrities and Their Pets Fashion Show

The Celebrities and Their Pets Fashion Show will be a featured entertainment segment at The Hawaii Woman Expo on September 10 and 11 at The Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. The Expo will be held from 10 a.m. til 6 p.m. and the Celebrities with their pets will walk the runway at 12:30 p.m. on both dates. The twist to this special event is that the Celebrities are not the ones wearing the fashions, the pets will be the ones dressed in designer outfits.

The purpose of this unique fashion show is to bring awareness to pet adoption and encourage volunteerism and foster homes for dogs and cats at the Oahu SPCA. Representatives from the organization will be in attendance to provide information on how to adopt a lovable pet from The Oahu SPCA or how to be a foster family to a homeless dog. The Celebrities will proudly walk or carry their pets on the runway and will show the audience how wonderful it is to have a pet as a member of your family. The Celebrities that do not already own a pet will walk the runway holding a puppy from the Oahu SPCA that needs a forever-home.

A fashion show would not be complete without a designer and great clothing. Monica Shigenaga, Owner/Designer of Cocojor creates award winning doggie apparel for dogs around the world and for pets of Hollywood Celebrities. In a single week, the Oahu SPCA found new homes for 29 dogs and cats. This not only gives them a second chance at happiness, but also gives 29 more animals the chance to come in from off the streets to live in a no-kill facility until they too find forever homes. And so the cycle continues...

HIKES for HOMES

Mariner's Ridge

This Saturday, July 23 at 8:45 am

The Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Wayde’s World Hawaii (a hiking group) will have its next hike and group meet-up for ‘Hikes for Homes” on SATURDAY JULY 23RD at MARINERS RIDGE at 8:45 AM. The purpose of this group is to provide a fun and healthy environment where shelter dogs can meet and mingle with the public. We hope that because of this exposure someone will be moved to adopt a shelter dog and save a life.

Oahu SPCA volunteers (approved dog walkers) will select up to 10 shelter dogs for the hike. (Dog walkers please meet at shelter at 7:00 AM.) The approved dog walkers will accompany the dogs as their handlers and monitor their behavior.

We will be taking our dogs on the Mariners Ridge Trail, a MODERATE 3 mile child and dog friendly hike.

Please wear your hiking boots, and bring plenty of water and snacks for yourself and your dog. Don't worry about your pace on this hike... There will be a very large combination of groups (nearly 50 people total) and several guides will be walking among the groups. Wayde will also be monitoring everyone and will wait with the leisurely hikers.

From Kalanianaole Hwy eastbound turn left on Keahole Dr.
This road becomes Hawaii Kai Drive.
Turn left on Kaluanui Rd.
Follow Kaluanui Rd to the top where it is a dead end

Black Dog Syndrome: Don’t Judge a Pup by its Color!

You’ve heard the old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but did you know this phrase also applies to countless homeless animals in shelters and rescues across the nation? “Black Dog Syndrome” refers to the sad reality that black or dark colored dogs face a higher rate of euthanasia, simply because they are overlooked by adopters for lighter colored dogs. While we’d certainly like to believe that prejudice doesn’t exist in the world of pet adoption and rescue, you’d be surprised by the conscious and subconscious choices adopters make when choosing their new furry family member to bring home.

But why are black dogs less popular than lighter colored dogs? It sounds bizarre – even cruel – but when we take an honest look at pop culture and human psychology, it all starts to make sense. Generally, there are several proposed reasons why black dogs are overlooked in shelters, including: cultural superstitions, mythology, good vs. evil theories (black or dark colors are usually associated with ‘evil’ and/or ‘the villain’), fear and danger associated with darkness, stereotypes of aggression, and also simply because black dogs do not “stand out” from the pack or are “not as cute” in the eyes of potential adopters.

So what’s the lesson here? Don’t judge a pup by its color! Pick your new family member carefully using criteria that fits your family or individual lifestyle: energy level, temperament, good with kids, etc. Potential adopters should be aware that choosing a dog simply based on its color or appearance can backfire – a lighter colored dog is not necessarily better behaved, more intelligent, more affectionate or more playful than a dark colored dog, and vice versa. Shelter dogs come in all sizes, shapes, colors, ages, and personalities; and to be honest we love them ALL equally!

Seniors Need Love Too

Every dog at the shelter is of course looking for a forever home, but our seniors often wait longer than others... or find themselves becoming almost permanent residents at the Oahu SPCA. We believe that there is a perfect home out there for every animal, even the seniors, and it is just a matter of time before the right family comes along. To help facilitate this matchmaking we are offering a "Seniors for Sixty" special during the month of July.

For senior dogs, living in a home can add not only length, but quality to their lives. They may need a little extra attention, but they will repay you for your efforts in tons of love and happiness!

Oahu SPCA vet technician, Jessica, suggests a quick list of things that seniors may need:

Bedding that is low to the ground, yet still thick enough to comfort aging bones and joints
Supplements specifically for seniors, including multivitamins for joint and bone support
A less active lifestyle, with short walks and more breaks during exercise (without too much pressure to continue on so they avoid overdoing it!)
Quiet atmosphere as they are less active
A safe spot to retreat to (an area specifically for them that will be respected by any guests or even a separate room) when surroundings are too overwhelming (such as small children or puppies who do not understand a senior dog can suffer from joint pain and may try to poke, prod, or induce strenuous activity, or the dog may simply be overwhelmed by the noise/activity level)
Weight management or diet food to compensate for the decrease in activity level
A home in which they do not have to travel up and down stairs constantly, a task that may be incredibly difficult for a senior
Annual to semi-annual blood profiles to observe and monitor the pet’s organ functioning and to check for diseases more likely to be found in aging pets, such as Diabetes or Cushing’s

Summer Adoption Special #2

Who can resist the charm of an adorable new puppy? Those bitty little paws, that cute clumsy stride... It is easy to see why people are instantly drawn to the puppies when they visit the shelter. However, this means that many of our seniors are often overlooked and wait many months or even years to be adopted. Because of the Oahu SPCA's no-kill philosophy we provide for our adoptable animals for as long as it takes to find them the right home, but we need your help as well.

Please consider adopting a senior dog! As mentioned earlier this year in a previous blog post, some of the pros to adopting an adult animal are that they are usually already trained, and you can already evaluate their mature personality to see if it fits with yours. Many times people also say adult shelter animals show their new owners extra love and gratitude for the rest of their lives, as they are able to fully appreciate the heroic act of being rescued from uncertainty.

Recap of Don Ho's Fundraiser

Over Memorial Day weekend (May 30, 2011) Al Waterson and You hosted a fundraiser for the Oahu SPCA at Don Ho's Island Grill at Aloha Tower Marketplace. The non-stop entertainment was hosted by Al Waterson (singer, emcee, actor) and entertainers included Jordan Segundo, Yasmin Dar, Brianna Abregano, and Manel Quingua. The event also featured several of the Oahu SPCA's adoptable dogs and many local celebrities were in attendance.

In total, the fundraiser generated about $930 for the Oahu SPCA. We would like to thank everyone not only for their monetary donations, but also for helping to spread awareness about adoption and responsible pet ownership. It was lots of fun and we can't wait to do it again soon!

Update on Ryuk

At the Oahu SPCA we love to hear updates on our adopted shelter animals. This month we were fortunate to touch bases with Francheska Tirado and Javier Martinez, who are originally from Puerto Rico. Francheska and Javier arrived in Hawaii in January 2010 due to Javier’s service in the Navy. However, due to the state’s quarantine requirements their gray Shih Tzu Gohan stayed in Puerto Rico at first then eventually reunited with his parents.

Francheska tells us she was very active with animal rights in Puerto Rico and knows how hard it is for no-kill animal shelters to find good homes for their animals. Once in Hawaii she and Javier started to look for a new addition to their family and decided to visit the Oahu SPCA during one of its PETCO adoption days. While there in April 2010 they fell in love with and adopted an adorable 5-month old pup named Athos.

Athos has since been renamed Ryuk, after a Japanese anime character. (Ryuk matches with Gohan, who is also a Japanese anime character.) When he first came home, Ryuk did well with potty training and crate training and didn’t cry as Francheska expected… even from the first night. He later went on to puppy training classes, as well as basic and advanced obedience. In fact, Ryuk is now in basic agility training!

Francheska says Ryuk loves to hike, go to the beach, and visit the dog park. He also loves to cuddle and kiss you when asked. He also know how to hug and jump, and goes crazy for peanut butter. Ryuk has become Francheska’s constant companion and even lovingly tugs on his brother Gohan’s hair.

We are so excited to hear this happy ending for Ryuk and his family. Thank you for sharing!!

Mahalo to Aloha United Way

The Oahu SPCA was recently selected as an Aloha United Way designation agency due to its continuing efforts in helping the homeless population deal with their pets while seeking temporary housing. This falls under Aloha United Way’s requirement to have agencies have some heath and human service component in the work that they do.

According to OSPCA Executive Director, Abbey Lightning-Bingham, the shelter was selected by Aloha United Way as a result of the efforts that the no-kill animal shelter had done in the health and human service area - helping to foster and take care of the pets from the homeless while they are in transitional housing. The shelter was actively involved with a major emergency rescue at Mai’li Point on the Waianae Coast and assisted with taking care of the animals from the homeless families while in the process of finding transitional homes.

“We are thrilled that we have come on board as a partner with Aloha United Way and know that they are a remarkable non-profit organization that we are proud to be affiliated with,” said Lightning-Bingham. “It is our mission to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home animals in finding their forever homes.”

As Aloha United Way launches its Pacesetter fundraising campaign on May 31st, contributors may select OSPCA as their non-profit organization of choice by selecting designation number 75921. This can be done online at http://www.auw.org/ or through the pledge forms in the workplace campaigns.

IPA Interact Rotary Club Breaks Records

The students of the Island Pacific Academy Interact Rotary Club, along with their faculty advisor Chris Luthi, helped the Oahu SPCA to raise over $900 on Saturday May 7 in just over 2 hours!!

The club implemented the creative concept of collecting monetary donations in dog food bowls, and after the project was done they all enjoyed a much deserved round of pizza at the shelter while they counted their funds. Much to everyone's surprise and happiness... the Interact Club collected a grand total of $904.69!!

This is just one of many projects the students have done for the shelter, and they truly exemplify the motto, "Service Above Self"! We thank them and appreciate all they do to support our mission that every healthy, treatable animal will find a forever home.

Recap of Pet Expo

The annual Pet Expo at the Blaisdell is one the highlights of the year for many pet owners. It is a chance to spend the day with your four-legged family and not be constrained by the prevailing "no pets allowed" indoors rule. There are a myriad of vendors and organizations in attendance to delight every pet owner's unique wants and needs. And even for non-pet owners... the Pet Expo is a great place to learn more about all the different breeds/activities directly from the owners and experts themselves.

For the Oahu SPCA, the Pet Expo presents an ideal opportunity to spread our message about the adoption of shelter animals, the importance of spaying/neutering your pets, and the many ways people can get involved to make a difference for our island's homeless pet population. This year we were very fortunate to have collected almost $1,500 in donations and sales proceeds from the event. In addition, one of our featured adoptable pups, Pohai, found her forever home that weekend.

Our presence at the Pet Expo also brought much needed brand awareness for the shelter, as we often find people are unaware of a no-kill animal shelter in Kapolei. :( Thankfully every outreach event brings new faces to the shelter and more word-of-mouth about the positive changes and good work our staff and volunteers are doing every day. In fact, we had an incredible 35 adoptions the following weekend!!

We are very thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of the Pet Expo and can't wait to attend again next time!

100 Cars For Good Program

The Oahu SPCA is one of 500 finalists in Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program, which will award vehicles to 100 nonprofit organizations based on votes from the public beginning May 9, 2011.

Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program will showcase five non-profit organizations each day for 100 days on Toyota’s Facebook page, facebook.com/toyota. Visitors can vote once a day for the organization that they feel is most deserving of a new Toyota vehicle. The OSPCA will be one of the five organizations highlighted for voting on Friday, May 27.

(Remember, voting is on Eastern Standard Time - 6 hours ahead)

Local residents are encouraged to support the no-kill animal shelter and their quest for a new Toyota Tundra. All ages are welcome and validated parking is available. Don Ho’s Island Grill offers a delicious food and drink menu in a family-friendly atmosphere. Donations for the Oahu SPCA will be greatly appreciated with 100 percent of the donations going directly to the Oahu SPCA. Prize tickets will also be available for purchase with the possibility of winning fantastic prizes from Cocojor, King Street Pet Hospital and other contributors. All proceeds from prize ticket sales will also benefit the Oahu SPCA.

The non-stop entertainment will be hosted by Al Waterson (Singer, Emcee, Actor). The incredible line-up of entertainers will include Jordan Segundo, Yasmin Dar, Brianna Abregano, Manel Quingua, and many more singers and celebrities.

The Oahu SPCA located at 91-1839 Roosevelt Avenue, Building 1142 in Kapolei is a non-profit shelter with a no-kill philosophy that provides a safe haven, food and medical treatment for rescued and abandoned animals. Students Making a Difference

Malia Brinich, a senior at Kapolei High School in the Human Services Academy, needed to put together a senior project that would benefit or make a difference. Being an animal lover, Malia chose the Oahu SPCA as the focus of her senior project. She said, "You guys give so much and never get anything in return, so I wanted to give back."

After careful thought, Malia decided to create a large banner to attract more attention to the organization. She wanted to get more people to see our shelter animals and increase adoption rates. We are extremely grateful for her efforts and believe that her contribution will have an immediate effect on brand awareness.

The shelter is as full as ever, but it is comforting to know there is a steady stream of families coming in to adopt our animals. The number of stray, abused, and neglected animals we see on a daily basis is staggering. There are so many loving pets in shelters who need a second chance at happiness and we appreciate all of you who have chosen to adopt rather than buy your pets!

We's also like to recognize all of the great people who participate in our foster program, caring for lucky dogs or cats until they find forever homes. Many of our animals blossom in a home environment and become much more desirable candidates for adoption because of the good work our foster parents do.

And even when people cannot have shelter animals in their homes, we are so thankful for those who choose to make donations of time, supplies, or money instead. Thank you to everyone who helps to keep our shelter going!!

You may feel your heartstrings tug when you see all the little kittens this season, but keep in mind that adult cats need loving homes too! Some of the pros to adopting an adult animal are that they are usually already trained, and you can already evaluate their mature personality to see if it fits with yours. Many times people also say adult shelter animals show their new owners extra love and gratitude for the rest of their lives, as they are able to fully appreciate the heroic act of being rescued from uncertainty.

The Oahu SPCA follows a no-kill philosophy, therefore animals who are not adopted will stay in our care for as long as necessary until they find forever homes. However, our adult cats and dogs tend to be our longest residents as they are often overshadowed by their adorable younger shelter mates.

A Growing Family

We love to hear follow up tales about our former shelter animals like this wonderful story from Oahu SPCA volunteers, Mick and Mindy...

When Mindy and I reunited after being apart 25 years, her plan to move here to be with me was beset by the fact she was leaving her two cats behind at her family home. I had pets during my childhood and the last one I had was my K-9 when I was a police officer on the mainland some years ago.

I started making preparations for her to come home. I started coming to the shelter to find her a cat so she may start a new bond with a kitty in her new home. I started emailing her different pictures I took with every trip. When she arrived, the first week we spent visiting the shelter and visiting the kitties. Mindy's job hadn't yet started so volunteering was something she wanted to do as well. Mindy chose a sweet tabby named Peter Pan. I was okay with it, not having been a cat person before. Suddenly I spotted a calico named Bombay. OK, I thought, Peter Pan would have a buddy and Mindy would have her cat, I would have mine.

There was a hitch with Bombay. She was brought in from a home she shared with a Pomeranian chihuahua mix dog. I felt bad about separating them. Little Jill was in a kennel and when I approached those little black eyes lit up, tail wagging and kisses to follow. Being used to big breeds, I was strangely drawn to this small fragile soul and fell in love.

I initially thought I would foster Jill so Bombay wouldn't be so traumatized then adopt her out later. Not so. We adopted her and based on the chihuahua mannerisms where she shivered like she was "chilly", we renamed her "Chili" or "Chilidog". "The Three Stooges" made up of Peter Pan, Bombay and Chilidog was set.

Mindy and I really liked the OSPCA and started doing volunteer work for them. Whether it was cleaning up and feeding in the kitty area, building sawhorses for signs, soliciting donations online or taking a dog or two to Petco, we've met some really wonderful people and are having fun.

One day while soliciting donations of pet food, cat condos and other things, I ran across a couple who were looking to give their dog away. In fact, if they couldn't find a home they were going to surrender him to the Humane Society. He had his shots, was neutered and chipped. Mindy met the lady in town where she got Bohdi, a leash, a bed and that was it. No food, no toys, nothing. We suspected they were getting rid of Bohdi to get a bigger breed dog but would not admit it. The lady turned around and walked away without so much as saying goodbye.

Bohdi howled the whole trip home. I truly thought the animal was going to have some real personality issues, which was the real reason they were surrendering him. We started fostering him that day. Gotta be a home somewhere for this special dog.

Bohdi jumped out of the car at home, not so sure why he was in this new place. I greeted him and he warmed up immediately. The Three Stooges weren't so sure at first, but within a week, they were like siblings. Jill stopped sleeping in her kennel and started sharing Bodhi's ultra plush large bed. Even the cats walk up to him and touch nose to nose.

I took Bohdi (By now we renamed him "Buddy") to Petco to find him a forever home. He was wildly popular but something didn't feel right that day. When we returned home that afternoon, Jill greeted him like her husband coming home from work. Even the cats ran up to him. He was tired, and glad to be home. I guess Buddy doesn't need a new home if he already has one.

Since fostering Buddy I have found he is totally trained, sits, lays down on command, is housebroken and does not bark when in the yard. He does alert when someone is at the door but is loving and loyal to all. He doesn't mark and squats to pee. I also found he is clicker trained. One funny trick he does is bear his teeth like a cheesy smile when you greet him or triple click.

We went from being alone to having a furry family. Funny how that works.

Hikes for Homes

The Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has formed a group called "Hikes for Homes". The purpose of this group is to provide a fun and healthy environment where our shelter dogs can meet and mingle with the public. We hope that with this exposure someone will be moved to adopt a shelter dog and save a life.

On hike days, the Oahu SPCA core volunteers meet at the shelter at 7:30 am, and with the consultation of staff select up to 10 shelter dogs for the hike. They accompany the dogs as their handlers and monitor their behavior throughout the activity. So far, we have only gone on the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail because it is short and has a dog friendly atmosphere, but we plan to extend the hikes to other trails this year with the advice and accompaniment of Wayde Fishman of Wayde’s World Hawaii, a hiking expert.

If you enjoy the company of dogs, friendly people, and the outdoors please join us on Saturday, April 16 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. We will meet in the parking lot of the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail at 9:00 am. Please bring lots of water and sun protection.

For the second year in a row, the ASPCA is challenging shelter directors across the country to lead their organizations and communities to save lives like never before. Challenge contestants will organize, innovate and work both harder and smarter in order to save at least 300 more cats and dogs between August and October 2011 than they did during the same period last year. There’s over $300,000 in grants as prizes, not to mention the biggest prize of all – being part of saving THOUSANDS more lives this year.

Lady and the Puppies Update

On March 2 a nice man brought 5 crying puppies to the Oahu SPCA. He found them in a small box in front of the Sack and Save in Nanakuli. Jessica, our vet tech, determined that they were only 2 days old and healthy very but hungry. In our large database we found a volunteer who had a lactating female dog without puppies. She was contacted immediately and the puppies were taken to her home where they found their new Mama.

Dice Run Recap

Bikers from various clubs around the island revved up their engines to come out to support the Oahu SPCA at a fundraiser recently held by a local motorcycle club, Kahu O Na Holoholona (Guardian of the Animals). Bacardi and Geico were also sponsors of the event with proceeds benefitting the care of more than 75 dogs and 60 cats at the no kill shelter in Kapolei.

Participants on the four stop run also had the chance to take a tour of the facility and visit many of the animals and meet the staff and volunteers. According to Executive Director, Jody Bade-DeViney, the fundraiser brought additional exposure from the community and proved to be a busy one for them that weekend with nearly 24 dogs and cats finding forever homes. “This is an example of how a community-based organization has banded together to come to the aid of a grass roots non-profit animal rescue shelter,” added Stephanie Ryan, OSPCA President and Co-Founder.

A special mahalo to Bryan and Amanda Beland for all of their incredible efforts to make this event a success! If only the world were full of more kind, generous people like the two of you!

Happy Endings

Despite the chaos of the tsunami weekend, we were fortunate to have many families open their homes to our rescue animals. Dogs Kolohe, Dolly, Ward, Radar, Pedro, Tamale, Chocolate, Paco, Chibi, Zaid and Alex were adopted along with cats Inkspot, Zambucca, and Barney.

Dogs Riggs, Carlos, Petey, and Verona went home to foster-to-adopt families and dogs Sherman and Sammie went into foster homes.

Thank you to everyone for their continued support! Without you we would not be able to further our mission and find forever homes for our shelter animals. Thank you again!!
